As a Functional Safety Engineer, you will guide the Engineering team on this wholistic discipline with the goal of designing not only to the desired function, but the many ways that systems or components may fail or operate outside what is intended. By practicing this discipline, we make better more robust products for our customers. Role and Responsibilities

  • Rapidly begin to work with cross-functional teams within Product Development including System, Hardware, and Software engineering to conduct ISO 26262 Functional Safety analysis of challenging technology including EV powertrain, infotainment, advance driver assistance, and V2X technologies. 
  • Function as a subject matter expert in ISO 26262 processes, methods, tools, and information (on the job training for System, Software and Component engineers as necessary). 
  • Results in becoming a technical lead for Functional Safety and a key Systems engineering resource in Battle Motors Engineering organization. 
  • Lead the establishment and continuously improve simple and safe advanced system designs. 
  • Work with System, Software, and Component engineers to globally author common safety ratings, processes, methods, tools, & training and help to accelerate company adoption of SysML based Functional Safety analysis at Battle Motors. 
  • Participate in moving fast and continuously innovating Systems engineering for creating exciting technology at Battle Motors. 
  • Support the definition of safety requirements and inform architecture and design.
  • Participate in design reviews and discussions to help ensure that safety goals and requirements are addressed.
  • Research Federal and State Compliance requirements for all functional safety areas including EV powertrain, mechanical, electromechanical, controls & calibrations and frontal & side impact, etc. and assign functional safety testing to meet those requirements.
  • Perform design safety analysis FMEA, FTA for systematic failures for both hardware and software systems. 
  • Prepare test case specifications for functional safety validation & testing.
  • Prepare and complete Hazard Analysis and Risk assessment and DFMEA System, Hardware, Software checks
  • Coordinate any functional safety testing for new and existing products with internal and external validation engineers to ensure on time execution. 
  • Develop, derive, and document safety concepts and requirements analysis for new electrical architectures.
  • Performing analyses for feasibility for manufacturing, assembly, and service processes
  • Produce concise management summaries and report-outs that meet the needs of management system functions.
  • Interact with suppliers, dealers, and customers as required.· Other duties as requested, directed, or assigned. 

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • BS Degree in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field. Master’s degree in engineering (preferred). 
  • 2+ years’ experience in Functional Safety (ISO 26262, or another IEC 61508 based standard) or the engineering of safety critical electronic systems 
  • Experience with EV powertrains required. 
  • Experience ensuring ISO26262 compliance is achieved for new features and components (both HW & SW)
  • Deep knowledge of Finite Element Analysis, Applied Solid Mechanics, Material science and Numerical Methods within an automotive/commercial product development environment, or Advanced CAE simulation certification required.
  • Good understanding of Global regulatory safety protocols and performance requirements.
  • Experience conducting failure analysis methodology like FMEA and fault trees.
  • Define functional safety concept/goals at feature and component level.
  • 2+ years of experience conducting Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments (HARA)
  • 2+ years authoring technical safety requirements.
  • Motivation to make complicated systems more robust and have influence in the EV truck industry.
  • Excellent communication skills leading system and component level engineers thru the FuSa process

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Experience in all phases of developing a new complex product. 
  • 4 years experience demonstrating leadership in Systems Engineering, software, or hardware architecture design. 
  • Experience with SysML or other MBSE tools, for example MagicDraw, Enterprise Architect, Medini Analyze, or equivalent tools.
  • Understanding of high voltage energy storage and   charging systems for EVs
  • Desire to work in a rapidly changing, multidisciplinary product development environment.
